Building knowledge, credibility and direction with Certificate in Corporate Governance
Completing the qualification confirmed for me that I do genuinely find governance to be an interesting field of work, and so after completing the Certificate in Corporate Governance, I enrolled in the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme with CGIUKI. I wanted to gain a basic understanding of corporate governance and my role in an organisation, achieve a professional qualification to attest to my knowledge, and explore whether governance was the right career path for me.
The importance of staying current in a changing governance landscape
Having up‑to‑date, structured governance knowledge, such as the Certificate in Corporate Governance, is important in today’s environment.The current business and governance environment evolves quickly, and as a function that is central to an organisation and its management, it is vital to keep up to date with any developments that may impact upon an organisation, such as the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, to avoid any last-minute panics or non-compliance.
Gaining practical insight into Board and committee governance
As someone that was new to governance with not much boardroom experience, I found all of the topics really useful. At the time of completing the qualification, I was in a role where I provided a lot of board and committee support, so I found these sections in particular to be really helpful. I also found it useful to gain a clear understanding of the roles of responsibilities of boards and directors. Studying best practice as part of the Certificate in Corporate Governance enabled me to reflect upon governance arrangements currently in place, and consider where improvements could be made. I have really enjoyed applying the theory that I have learnt into real-life scenarios.
Real world application
Completing the certificate enabled me to better understand the ‘why’ behind current corporate governance best practice. This has helped me to engage more constructively with senior stakeholders, boards and colleagues, allowing them also to better appreciate the value of good corporate governance arrangements. Through applying the theory that I have learnt from my qualifications, I am able to perform better as a governance professional and take on new tasks with confidence.
