"Governance functions should leverage technology and automation to be seen as enablers rather than blockers in effective decision making. "

What does governance mean to you?
Governance functions should leverage technology and automation to be seen as enablers rather than blockers in effective decision making. I am committed to creating and developing technology and automation solutions to help in house functions spend time on being effective governance advisors.
What was your route into a career in governance?
My route into governance started at the age of 19 when I first heard about the role of a Company Secretary at the University of Liverpool during a lecture. I then managed to get work experience in a company secretarial team within an insurance company throughout university breaks and a 3-month company secretarial internship at a professional services provider. Since then, I have spent most of my career in governance at professional services organisations working with listed organisations.
What do you regard as the most significant achievement in governance of your career?
My most significant achievement in governance probably came more recently when I helped build, develop and implement an identity verification solution. I have had lots of opportunities to travel internationally though during my time with EY and learn more about different cultures globally.
How did the Institute support your career as a governance professional?
Becoming a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute has helped me grow in my career within professional services. I also was able to gain practical experience in advance of completing my masters degree at the London South Bank University which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the Corporate Governance theory.
What are your favourite things to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy running, swimming, skiing, eating out at new restaurants and travelling. I completed the Great Northern 10k Run last summer and have signed up again this year.
What would be your dream trip, and why?
My dream trip would be a tour of Japan trying new restaurants, visiting new places and skiing as I have heard it is the best place to go skiing.
