What does governance mean to you?
To me, Governance is the framework that makes good decision making possible. Good governance helps businesses foster a healthy culture, create a strategic direction and to move in that direction with speed and confidence. Governance helps balance entrepreneurialism with responsibility and realism, which helps keep the industries we work in (and businesses we work at) safe.
What was your route into a career in governance?
To me, Governance is the framework that makes good decision making possible. Good governance helps businesses foster a healthy culture, create a strategic direction and to move in that direction with speed and confidence. Governance helps balance entrepreneurialism with responsibility and realism, which helps keep the industries we work in (and businesses we work at) safe.
What do you regard as the most significant achievement in governance of your career?
It would have to be learning how to manage an internal, global portfolio across highly regulated environments. You absolutely learn something everyday! Either that or helping develop and build an investor onboarding solution as part of a global group-wide project.
How did the Institute support your career as a governance professional?
I've sat exams at all CGI levels and feel that each level taught something different. Level 4 (CGI certificate) gave me a steady governance foundation, enabled me to 'connect the dots' and learn on-the-job and to apply learning to everyday tasks. Level 5 (CGI diploma) enabled me to strengthen those core foundation blocks, helped me understand more complex business arrangements and toughed upon basic management skills. CGI professional (Tier 1 and Tier 2) enabled me to understand the start-to-end business model and understand how to apply the UK Corporate Governance Code as a governance gold-standard.
What are your favourite things to do outside of work?
I love spending time with friends and family. A wholesome Sunday walk and roast dinner is a winter favourite, and days on the beach with a BBQ is a summer favourite!
What would be your dream trip, and why?
Two weeks on the beach in the Caribbean. No explanation needed!
