"For me, governance has always been about making sure things are open, transparent, and managed in the right way—so that everyone involved can trust the process and outcomes."

What does governance mean to you?

Within my role at JTC, governance in the Trust sector is about making sure things are run responsibly and transparently. It’s about having the right checks in place, clear guidelines, and open communication to ensure everyone does the right thing. Good governance means earning trust, managing risks, adhering to regulations, and making fair decisions that stand up to scrutiny.

What was your route into a career in governance?

My route into governance began when I moved to Jersey in 2006 and started studying for my ICSA (now CGIUKI) qualification. That experience really laid the foundations for my career and sparked my interest in how organisations should be run. For me, governance has always been about making sure things are open, transparent, and managed in the right way—so that everyone involved can trust the process and outcomes.

What would you consider to be your governance career highlight?

One of my governance career highlights was winning the prize for ICSA Student of the Year in 2009 (Jersey) — which really gave me confidence and set the tone for my professional journey. More recently, becoming Co-Chair of the Jersey Corporate Governance Committee in 2025 with Stephen McGrath stands out as a major achievement. It’s a role where I can help shape best practice and support the sector at a strategic level.

How did the Institute support your career as a governance professional?

The Institute has been a huge support throughout my career as a governance professional. The training and qualifications gave me a solid technical foundation and boosted my confidence early on. Beyond that, the ongoing resources, events, and networking opportunities have kept me up-to-date and connected within the sector. Being part of the committee has also allowed me to give back to the Institute, which is something I really value. Plus, I’ve benefited from continual professional development through the many events the committee runs on behalf of the Institute.

What are your favourite things to do outside of work?

Outside of work, I love to run, shop, and spend time with my family. I also really enjoy catching up with friends. Exploring Jersey’s beautiful coastal paths and trying out new restaurants are favourites too. Having a good balance helps me recharge and stay inspired.

What’s a hobby or activity that brings you joy?

I love combining my passion for running with raising money for charities—it’s an incredible experience to make a difference while doing something I truly enjoy. Last year, I ran the London Marathon and was thrilled to raise a fantastic amount for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. The impact inspired my son so much that we’re now training together for his own sponsored 5K for the same charity! One of the best things about running is how it takes you to fascinating places and creates unforgettable memories.
