The King’s Speech could be a milestone for better governance

Peter Swabey FCG, Policy & Research Director, The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland, commented:

“Today has been an important day for governance with several bills in the King’s Speech which have the potential to fix longstanding governance issues.

“We are delighted that audit reform and corporate governance reform were included in the King's Speech today. The new Government has recognised the urgency of reforming the UK’s audit and corporate governance framework.

“We are confident that the draft bill announced today will help to restore investor confidence in our equity markets by improving the quality of financial information available to shareholders and other stakeholders.

“We are also very pleased that today’s King’s Speech included the reintroduction of the Football Governance Bill. With so many competing manifesto commitments, this illustrates the importance which the new Government attaches to ensuring that football is placed on a sounder footing. We look forward to working with the new Government to develop proportionate and robust regulation of our national game.

“We look forward to working with the Government in the months ahead.”
