Tom Morrison Essay Prize Competition Terms and Conditions

By entering The Institute’s Tom Morrison Essay Prize Competition (thereafter the ‘essay competition’) you are agreeing to be bound by the terms and conditions as set out below:

1. Entry to the competition

1.1. Only persons over the age of 18 are eligible for entry to the essay competition. You may be asked, at any stage, to provide the Institute or a third party with proof of age and/or identity.

1.2. All entries must be received through the Institute's email tom_morrison@cgi.org.uk to be valid.

1.3. Entry into the essay competition is free. Each entrant shall be entitled to make one (1) entry into the essay competition. In the event that the Institute deems an entrant to have made multiple applications to enter or to have acted in bad faith, the entrant shall be excluded from the essay competition and consequently ineligible to win the prize.

1.4. All conditions of entry are available under ‘Entry information’ on the Institute's website. 

2. Prizes

2.1. There shall be two (2) winners in the essay competition: the winner will receive a prize of £1000 and the runner up will receive a prize of £500.

2.2. The winners will be notified by email or telephone by 1 May 2024.

2.3. If you fail to provide The Institute with correct contact details, the competition organisers will be unable to contact you and you may forfeit your prize as a result.

2.4. The prize is neither transferrable nor exchangeable.

3. Publicity and personal information

3.1. It is a condition of entry into the essay competition that the Institute has the right to communicate the winner and runner up’s names and entry via any channel or medium (including but not limited to email, website, social media) and all entrants shall be deemed to have accepted this condition.

4. Judging

4.1. Where any prize is awarded by means of a panel of judges choosing the best entries no correspondence with entrants or any other person will be entered into nor will any explanation be offered beyond the publicly announced judges’ citation.

4.2. All entries will be judged by an independent and impartial third party.

5. Finality of decisions

5.1. The judges’ decisions relating to the choice of the winners and the awarding of prizes are final.

5.2. By entering the essay competition each entrant agrees to release, discharge and hold harmless The Institute, its legal representatives, affiliates, subsidiaries, agencies and their respective officers, directors, employees and agents from any costs, damages or liability whatsoever and however incurred, suffered or sustained in connection with the essay competition or the acceptance of the prize.

6. Termination of essay competition

6.1. The Institute reserves the right to vary the terms of, or terminate, the essay competition at any time at its absolute discretion without liability to any contestant or other person.

6.2. The Institute will not award any prize if the essay competition is terminated.

7. Collecting and processing personal information

7.1. We collect and process personal information in order to support the administration of the Tom Morrison Essay Prize competition. Such personal information is limited to the name and contact details of the entrant.

7.2. The completed essay submissions will only be processed to support the judging process and essays are shared anonymously with the judges. On completion of the judging process, the judging panel will be informed of the identity of the winners via email. The judging panel comprises Institute employee(s) and independent third party judges.

7.3. We will use entrants’ contact details to notify the winners.

7.4. Personal information will also be passed to the editorial team of Governance and Compliance magazine so that they can liaise with you on the reproduction of your essay or part of your essay in the magazine. 

7.5. Further information and checks may be carried out to validate the winner’s eligibility.

7.6. The names of winners will be retained indefinitely. Details of the entrants, including any additional personal information that is provided to us, will be destroyed no later than 3 years after the essay submission.
