Company secretaries make a significant contribution to organisational performance, and most especially to the effective workings of the board. Still, the very nature of the role means they can be an undervalued, and underused, resource.
This award recognises those company secretaries who have mastered the complex legal and regulatory environments in which they work and have made a demonstrable difference. Nominees should come from the senior end of the profession and will be able to evidence considerable skill and sound judgement in handling conversations in the boardroom, a solid understanding of the context in which they operate, and effective leadership of the secretarial or compliance function.
The judges are particularly interested in individuals who can demonstrate that they enjoy the support of the board and have led initiatives at a very high level. They may, for example, have led their team through a challenging period, or exercised a firm hand in delivering a particularly complex piece of work, or delivered results beyond the expectations of their role.
