How to keep networking during COVID-19

Networking is about nurturing relationships and making PEOPLE connections. We may not be able to network in the way we used to, but it’s still possible.

Networking is about nurturing relationships and making PEOPLE connections. We may not be able to network in the way we used to, but it’s still possible.

Start by considering the type of event you are most happy with (larger online events/one-on-one meetings/social or work focussed), the format you prefer (Skype, Google Hangouts, Zoom, Facetime, WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams not forgetting the good old telephone and even email) and identify your networking objectives.

1. Existing networks?

  • Who do you already know and can reach out to? What relationships can you reignite?
  • Check-in with colleagues, business contacts, friends and family members
  • Conversations can build a platform for sharing advice, developing skills, finding opportunities, and making introductions

2. New networks

  • Who might it be helpful to speak with to achieve your networking objectives?
  • Research networking events. Many are advertised on booking platforms such as Eventbrite, and many new opportunities are always cropping up.
  • Ask your existing network to share where they like to spend time virtually.

3. Utilise social networks like Linkedin and Facebook

  • Identify people to connect with, keep your profile up-to-date to let people know what you’re up to
  • Share helpful articles and videos. Comment, like and share other’s posts
  • Join groups that interest you
  • Be authentic and make genuine connections

As Maya Angelou said ‘people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel’ and right now we all need to feel connected.
