Steve Allen

Steve is Group Company Secretary at Rio Tinto, a position he has held since 2017. Prior to this, Steve was Deputy General Counsel at BG Group plc and served as company secretary of BG Group from 2011 to 2016, having previously been Chief Counsel, Corporate, from 2008 to 2011. Before joining BG Group in 2005, Steve was a corporate lawyer for Herbert Smith LLP in London.

Steve passionately believes that business (including mining!) has a critical role to play in making a positive difference to society and for those who follow us.

The way that businesses are governed, the purpose and strategic priorities they set and the values they follow are all crucial to making that difference. He believes the role that the Company Secretariat profession can play in this context is genuinely meaningful. He views his recent appointment as a new industry champion for the Securities sector for the Dormant Assets Expansion Scheme as a tremendous opportunity for companies to get involved in promoting and delivering greater social equality, and making one such positive difference.

Steve is a Vice-Chair of the GC100 and co-leads Working Group 1 (Corporate Governance, Company law and ECM).

When not in the Boardroom, Steve can be found cycling in the Surrey hills (and just recently, across the French Alps!!). He is married to Stephanie and has two (very) active 11-year old daughters
