Shivaji Shiva
Shivaji Shiva Charities Partner
VWV
Shivaji works with charities of all sizes from local volunteer-led associations to household name charities with complex national or multi-national operations.
He advises on the creation of charities, their dissolution, and most of the issues they encounter in between. This includes providing strategic advice at every stage of a charity's life cycle helping charities with their day to day legal needs and, increasingly, helping to implement complex and contentious governance changes.
As a 'trusted adviser', Shivaji has enjoyed long periods as the retained legal advisor to national charities, including UK members of international movements.
Shivaji writes regularly on legal developments relevant to charities and delivers practical, plain English training for charity trustees on governance and legal developments relevant to charities. Recent topics include equality, diversity and inclusion; opportunities to 'build back better' post pandemic; greener travel; and the implications of the Butler-Sloss case for the duties of charity trustees when making ethical investments.
Away from work Shivaji is a serial charity trustee, currently involved with a grant making foundation with particular links to the faith and education sectors. He is also an occasional transport campaigner, currently advocating sustainable travel, School Streets and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods.
