In May last year, The Chartered Governance Institute was commissioned by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to lead a piece of work to assess the quality of independent board evaluations for listed companies in the UK and to identify ways in which they might be improved.
The work has included the development of a code of practice for external board evaluators, a series of principles for companies on good practice in selecting and appointing an external evaluator and guidance on what constitutes good practice in board evaluation disclosure.
This spring, nearly a year on, the fruits of that work are due to be published. In this session, we explore some of the conclusions drawn and ask: what lessons have been learned? Are there any lessons can be drawn from evaluations of recent years? And what happens next?

Peter Swabey FCG

Peter Swabey is Policy and Research Director at The Chartered Governance Institute. He is responsible for developing the Institute’s profile to members, regulators, policymakers, employers and other stakeholders by delivering thought leadership and lobbying campaigns aligned to the Institute’s strategy and promoting strong governance as the vital ingredient for success in organisations.
Peter joined The Chartered Governance Institute in 2013 and has almost 30 years’ industry experience. Previously, Peter was at Equiniti where he was Company Secretary and Industry Leadership Director; he was also a Director of Equiniti David Venus, Equiniti’s Company Secretarial Services provider.
Peter is a member of the Institute’s Company Secretary’s Forum, the CBI Companies Committee, the QCA Corporate Governance Expert Group, as well as being an Alternate Member of the Takeover Panel and a past Chairman of the Institute’s Registrars Group.
A history graduate, and Fellow of The Chartered Governance Institute, Peter is a regular speaker at industry conferences and events, with an industry-wide reputation as an expert on shareholder and corporate governance matters.
Chris Hodge
Policy Advisor, ICSA: The Governance Institute
Chris Hodge is an independent advisor on governance and regulation. For ten years until 2014, Chris was Director of Corporate Governance at the Financial Reporting Council in the UK. In that capacity he was responsible for the UK Corporate Governance Code and for introducing the first national stewardship code for investors. Chris then served as the FRC’s Director of Strategy from 2014 to 2016.
As well as ICSA, Chris is an advisor to the International Corporate Governance Network and Board Intelligence. Other current activities include working with EBRD and Nestor Advisors to develop a new corporate governance code for Croatia, chairing the Global Stewardship Codes Network, and sitting on the International Advisory Board of Hawkamah, a corporate governance institute based in Dubai.
Chris was the first chair of the European Corporate Governance Code Network, which brings together bodies responsible for national codes across Europe to exchange views and share good practice. He was a member of the Hellenic Corporate Governance Council from 2012 to 2017.
