Specimen board meeting etiquette for sixth form colleges and 16–19 academies

The board of any organisation is the predominant mechanism by which strategy is agreed, performance monitored and executive actions held to account on behalf of stakeholders. It is therefore essential that governors and trustees conduct their meetings with a view to optimising the use of the time and intellectual capital of board members. As such, boards need to focus on the purpose of the meeting, and all the elements that can contribute to an effective discussion, including the way governors and trustees interact and work together to ensure sound decision making.

This guidance note provides practical guidance, tips and reinforces etiquette for attendance and participation in sixth form colleges or 16–19 academy board meetings that boards may wish to consider. The aim is to help ensure that boards have an agreed protocol for meeting behaviours to support effective meetings and help all members to remain focused in the performance of their duties and responsibilities.
