The Institute has published a new guidance note to help those charities registered and operating in England and Wales who employ staff or undertake activities that would warrant the additional assurance of a lead trustee to provide specific support and guidance to the board or others, and includes a specimen lead trustee role description.
For small charities with no, or few, staff it may be more pragmatic that specific areas of the charity’s activities are divided between the trustees on an ad hoc basis. However in such cases the delegation of authority and powers should still be formally agreed and reviewed by the board regularly.
