Helping academies develop good governance and better outcomes for trusts and schools, regulators and funders, and staff and pupils.
School governance across England was transformed with the introduction of academy trusts.
As education organisations, registered companies and exempt charities, academy trusts work within multiple regulatory frameworks with many layers of internal governance. Likewise, the board of trustees has a broad range of duties, while the role of headteacher has expanded to executive headteachers, regional directors and directors of education.
Expectations of academy governance are understandably high, reflecting the size, scale and complexity of trusts working with large numbers of pupils and using public funds.
But governance is about more than compliance. We know that good governance leads to better outcomes for trusts and schools, for their regulators and funders, and crucially, for staff and pupils.
With our practical guidance, knowledge and training, we support company secretaries, clerks and leaders in academy trusts and schools to meet their legal and highest standards of governance.
The Academy Trust Governance Code
The Academy Trust Governance Code is a voluntary and sector-led code for academy trusts and schools. It aims to improve and embed good governance practices across the sector, based on the principle that effective governance is essential to fulfilling a trust’s aims and ambitions. The Code has been developed by a group of sector-based organisations, co-chaired by CGIUKI and the Confederation of School Trusts (CST).
