This session covered the application process, the evidence required and the opportunity in smaller groups to do some networking and hear from others who have gone through the process.

The East of England Branch (comprising Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and parts of North London) hosted a webinar on the changes to the Charities Act that are coming into force this autumn, spring 2023 and autumn 2023.

An overview of the changes was delivered by Mike Beckett, who is an experienced charity leader.

Mike Beckett is CEO of the busiest Foodbank in the East of England with over 15 years of Governance experience in various roles. Serves the Chartered Governance Institute’s East of England as a branch committee member and is a student member of the CGI and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators (WCCSA). Mike won the Institute of Directors (IoD) East of England Chair's Director of the Year Award 2021 is a Chartered Director, IoD Fellow and Essex branch of the IoD Charity Ambassador. The charity I lead won the Charities Against Fraud Award, small charity award winner in 2018 and Colchester Council’s Community Recognition Award in 2020 and 2021 and Living Wage Foundation’s 2022 Living Wage Champion Award Winner: Third Sector Champion.

Our speaker, Beverley Turner, Chartered Tax Advisor and Chartered Secretary, talked mainly about Income Tax and Corporation Tax, areas in which she specialises.

The BBC Studios Response and Lessons for the Future for the East

The East of England Branch (comprising Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, and parts of North London) held a webinar at which they provided attendees with an insight into how The BBC Studios worked during the pandemic and the good practices they applied which can be lessons for use in the future in the East.

A step towards better governance in the East of England

This event provided an opportunity to consider, discuss and share the implications of diversifying the Board.

This webinar took place on Tuesday 7 December 2021

Beverley Turner, Partner at Lamburn & Turner in St Albans, Chartered Accountant, Chartered Tax Adviser and Chartered Secretary, shared her knowledge of the changes in charity governance over the last few years. She also addressed the pros and cons of charities versus not-for-profit organisations as well as when charities should have their accounts independently reviewed and by whom.

Join the students of the East of England branch on Tuesday 5th October 2021 at 7pm for an interactive session with branch member Erika Percival as she gives her insights on life as a Company Secretary.

The East of England CGI Committee Members will be present to welcome you to the branch and answer any additional questions you may have about your role as a Company Secretary.

The East of England Branch invites you to a webinar on ‘Data Protection in the East During Covid’, followed by an informal networking opportunity.

This will be a great opportunity to hear from The DPO Centre, a fast growing company who provide virtual Data Protection Officers and advice to their clients. It will be a chance for members to ask questions and to share their own experiences with fellow members. It will also be a chance for some informal networking with people from our expanded region – all from the comfort of your own device!
