Once you’re qualified as an Associate, you can use the letters ACG after your name and the designations Chartered Secretary and Chartered Governance Professional.
Fellowship (FCG)
For the most experienced governance professionals. To become a Fellow, you must successfully complete the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme and have eight years’ work experience, which can be reduced to five years if you have a relevant degree or professional qualification.
Once you’re qualified as a Fellow, you can use the letters FCG after your name and the designations Chartered Secretary and Chartered Governance Professional.
How to become an chartered member
Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme
The first step to chartered status is to pass the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme, either directly with CGIUKI or as part of a postgraduate degree.
Work experience
Along with passing the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme, you’ll need at least six years’ related work experience – or three years if you have a relevant degree or professional qualification.
Existing professional qualification
If you’re a qualified member of another professional association, you may be able to bypass some modules in the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme.
Degree
If you have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, you may be able to qualify as a chartered member with only three years’ work experience and successful completion of the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme.
From student to chartered membership
Work experience you gain before or during your time studying the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme counts – so you could progress straight from your exams to chartered membership.
Chartered membership fees
We review the fees for each level of membership every year and publish them on our main Membership Fees page.
Affiliated membership
If you’re not ready to study the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme, affiliated membership could be for you. It’s a straightforward way to get professional recognition for your existing academic and career achievements, without the need to study for another qualification.
Globally recognised
As a chartered member, you’ll be part of an international governance community. If you decide to live and work in another country, you can transfer your membership across our global divisions Australia, Canada, China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Southern Africa, and Zimbabwe.
We also have an agreement with The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICSAN).
