This unique qualification introduces the social housing governance environment. It focuses on equipping those who work in the social housing sector with the knowledge and key skills necessary to develop good governance practices within their organisation.
You will be able to help your organisation focus on its main aims while applying the key principles of the National Housing Federation’s Code of Governance and Code of Conduct.
You don’t need any previous qualifications to study the Certificate in Social Housing Governance. In fact, it’s the perfect way for anyone with governance responsibilities in the social housing sector to start developing your governance knowledge — whatever your background or skills.

Suitable for
This is an accessible and practical qualification for those who work at all levels of the sector. Specifically, if you work in a social housing organisation of any size, from a national governing body to a smaller housing association or local authority, with governance responsibility. This is a recommended qualification for governance professionals in the following positions:
- Company Secretary/Assistant Company Secretary
- Governance Administrator
- Finance officers within the social housing sector
- Clerk to the Board
- Those working in social housing who undertake any regulatory or compliance activity or are involved in the provision of relevant information to that activity

Bursary
We’re proud to offer ten bursaries each year to cover 90% of the course fees supported by the Chartered Secretaries’ Charitable Trust.
To apply for a bursary, you/your organisation must:
- Be able to cover the remaining 10% of the course fee.
- Be able to supply a copy of your organisation’s most recent annual report and accounts.
- Be able to supply a reference from your employer to support your application.
Please submit applications by 30 June 2025. Successful applicants will be notified by 23 July 2025.

Content
The course is delivered through an online learning platform (LMS), where you can also ask questions and discuss topics with other students. There are live webinar events, which are recorded so you can catch up if you can’t watch them live.
Assessment
Successful completion of this course will be dependent on you passing the assessment. Your overall grade at the end of the course is made up of marks from two components:
- A written assignment worth 60% of your overall result
- A multiple-choice assessment worth 40% of your overall result
To pass the course and achieve the qualification, you will have to achieve a pass for the written assignment and a pass for the multiple-choice question exam.
