Comment: "Black Excellence in Governance changes everything"

Damilare Ojo

I have always believed that recognition is a powerful tool for driving impact. It validates effort, builds confidence, and inspires others to aim higher. This belief, combined with my personal experiences in governance and leadership spaces, motivated me to be part of the team behind the launch of the Black Excellence in Governance Awards UK - a platform dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black professionals in governance roles, individuals whose expertise, innovation, and commitment are shaping the future of boards and organisations across the UK.

Providing visibility

Throughout my professional career, I noticed that despite outstanding talent and dedication, many Black professionals remain underrepresented in leadership and governance positions. Their achievements are often invisible to the wider professional community, and the lack of visible role models can discourage aspiring leaders from pursuing governance careers. The Awards aim to change that narrative. By recognising excellence and providing visibility, we shine a spotlight on these professionals and demonstrate what success looks like in governance. Beyond visibility, the Awards are about promoting inclusion at the highest levels. Diverse Boardrooms bring broader perspectives, better decision-making, and stronger outcomes. By celebrating Black excellence in governance, we provide tangible examples of the impact inclusive governance can have, encouraging organisations to expand their search for talent and challenge unconscious bias.

The role model effect

Equally important is the role-modelling effect. Seeing accomplished Black leaders recognised for their expertise can inspire the next generation of professionals. I have personally benefited from having mentors and role models, and I want these Awards to create similar opportunities for others to show that leadership in governance is not only possible, but achievable. Moreover, the Awards contribute to building networks and communities. They bring together Black governance professionals, sponsors, mentors, and organisations seeking board-level talent. These connections create support systems, foster collaborations, and open doors that might otherwise remain closed.

Ultimately, the Black Excellence in Governance Awards are about more than celebration. They are about accountability, equity, and legacy. They address systemic barriers, close gaps in representation, and affirm that Black excellence in governance is vital, recognised, and enduring. The inaugural Awards will honour professionals who exemplify excellence, inspire change, and pave the way for future generations. It is a celebration of achievement, a call for inclusivity, and a vision for a stronger, more representative governance landscape in the UK.
