Good governance in sports organisations is no longer optional. In 2016, UK Sport and Sport England put good governance at the heart of the conditions attached to funding with the implementation of the Code for Sports Governance.
Intended to protect public investment and establish a new gold standard for sports governance, the Code provides a standard framework of governance for a wide and diverse range of national, regional and local bodies, community groups and charities that provide sport and physical activity opportunities.
To help sports organisations adhere to the Code, which calls for some of the highest standards of industry governance in the world, we developed the Sports Governance Academy in partnership with Sport England: our one-stop resource hub for all things sports governance.
Together, we champion good governance to enable organisations to be successful and develop the governance skills, experience, resources and networks that people involved in the sport and physical activity sector need.
Code for Sports Governance
The Code for Sports Governance sets out the levels of transparency, diversity and inclusion, accountability and integrity that are required from those organisations who seek – and are in receipt of – UK Government and National Lottery funding from Sport England and/or UK Sport.

Certificate in Sports Governance
This webinar taught course will equip those working in the sports sector with the knowledge and key skills to develop good governance practices within their organisation. Upon completion, you’ll be eligible for Affiliate membership of the Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland. The SGA offers a bursary scheme for successful applicants to access this course free of charge.
