Chartered Governance Institute responds to announcement of new Football Regulator and governance code for football clubs

The white paper very sensibly highlights that the Regulator will establish a compulsory ‘Football Club Corporate Governance Code’ and that this code will draw on existing codes including the UK Corporate Governance Code, the Wates Principles and the Code for Sports Governance. Rolls-Royce and M&S governance experts share ‘Governance Professional of the Year’ honour

Nicola Caroll, Corporate Governance Director at Rolls-Royce Holdings plc, and Robert Lyons, Deputy Company Secretary at Marks and Spencer Group plc have been jointly named ‘Governance Professional of the Year’ at The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland’s 2021 Awards, which took place at the London Park Lane Hilton Hotel last night. The Awards, which were hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Dan Walker, recognise those individuals and teams who have excelled in good governance, helping organisations to better serve their stakeholders and society in the process.

Revised Stewardship Code good news for asset owners, but asset managers will need effective monitoring to avoid a tick-box approach, says The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland

The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland has today welcomed the publication by the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of the UK Stewardship Code 2020 (the Code), believing that the revised version reflects the changing needs of asset owners and public expectations. The governance body believes, however, that the increased focus on reporting to asset owners may have an impact on the quality and quantity of engagement with companies and the emphasis on ESG issues risks provoking more ‘policy statements’ than the ‘outcomes and effectiveness’ focus recommended by the Kingman review. The FRC and its successor will need to monitor asset manager reporting and activity to ensure that this is not the case, the Institute stresses.
